The LASIK Quiz: Do You Know Facts from Fiction?

Posted by Dr. Clarke

Take The LASIK Quiz

After all the years LASIK has been performed you probably think you have read everything there is to read about this topic. You may also think you know everything you need to know about it too.

Unfortunately there is a lot of misinformation on the web, not to mention advancements in vision correction technology. If you’re game, take the LASIK Quiz and see if you know facts from fiction. And no cheating!

Quiz Question #1

Which of the following is NOT a refractive error that traditional LASIK can treat?

  1. Myopia
  2. Hyperopia
  3. Presbyopia
  4. Astigmatism

If you guessed Astigmatism then you are wrong! There are still patients who think that their astigmatism cannot be corrected by LASIK. Astigmatism is a refractive error that is caused by an irregularly shaped cornea and it results in blurry vision. LASIK can fix Astigmatism.

The correct answer is Presbyopia. Or it WAS presbyopia. This inevitably happens to us as we age and the clear lens in our eyes begins to lose its ability to change focus. We begin to have difficulty seeing things close up like reading materials.

We must admit this was a trick question. Now even Presbyopia can be treated with KAMRA Inlay. Whether you have a cataract or have presbyopia in your 40s, KAMRA Inlay is a revolutionary treatment that can improve your vision at ALL distances.

Quiz Question #2

With the improved technology of today’s laser vision correction, you can choose any surgeon to do your LASIK and expect superior results because the laser is doing all the work.

  1. True
  2. False

Nothing could be farther from the truth.  Unless you find a surgeon with experience who will perform all the necessary tests to be sure you are a good candidate, then look elsewhere. Find a doctor who will listen thoughtfully to your questions and take the time to answer them. It is critical to eliminate anything that might preclude you from having LASIK, and it is the surgeon who will interpret your tests to make sure you are a great candidate and consequently will have great results.

Did you know that Dr Stephen S. Dudley and Dr Gerald Clarke were the first in the state of Wisconsin to perform laser vision correction? It’s true!

Quiz Question #3

You should plan to take off approximately two weeks after LASIK surgery to recover.

  1. True
  2. False

We had to throw in an easy one. There is virtually no recovery time after LASIK. You are instructed to go home and rest (nap) for several hours immediately after LASIK. Most patients are seeing considerably better by the next day and can return to work and most normal activities within a day (with some restrictions). OptiVision Eye Care gives all patients detailed instructions for their aftercare.

Quiz Question #4

Lasik Test

Which of the following can prevent you from having LASIK?

  1. Astigmatism
  2. Glaucoma
  3. Dry Eyes
  4. Color blindness
  5. Wearing hard contact lenses

Extreme dry eye should be treated prior to LASIK, but does not prevent you from moving forward.

Patients should refrain from wearing contact lenses for a period of time before the surgery as prescribed by your surgeon, but do not prevent you from having LASIK.

The correct answer is Glaucoma, but patients may be able to safely have other types of laser vision correction instead.

There are other factors that make you ineligible for LASIK. That’s why a thorough LASIK evaluation is necessary to know if you are a good candidate.

Quiz Question #5

NASA and the US military have approved LASIK and insist on the same technology used at OptiVision Eye Care.

  1. True
  2. False

This is absolutely true and you can watch the video LASIK on the Frontlines here.

Quiz Question #6

Which of these statements is true?

  1. If the laser stays on too long, it can burn your eyes
  2. LASIK is painful
  3. The surgery only lasts for five years
  4. Patients must be 18 years old to have LASIK

This was another obvious one. The correct answer is d) you must be 18. The other choices are classic myths and misinformation.

So how did you do? Actually there was one other little “mistake or trick” in here. If you know what it is, let us know.

If you are considering LASIK or have your own questions, come in for a free LASIK evaluation.

Make sure you know ALL the facts from fiction about LASIK.
