What is Bifocal LASIK? Bifocal LASIK is an advanced type of laser vision correction for patients with presbyopia. This procedure changes the shape of the eye’s cornea to create different power zones for seeing at varying distances. Bifocal LASIK was developed by Dr. Clarke & Dr. Dudley. OptiVision eye doctors are the only refractive surgeons in the area performing this exciting new procedure.

What is presbyopia? Presbyopia is a condition that shows up in your 40’s. Your near vision blurs as your eye’s natural lens begins to lose its focusing ability. Many times if you are nearsighted and have presbyopia, you are able to see better close up without your glasses or contacts.

How does Bifocal LASIK work? Since the lens in your eye has lost its flexibility, you can no longer see at all distances simultaneously- here’s how the procedure works:

• The Bifocal LASIK procedure gives you multiple zones by reshaping the eye’s clear surface into precise contours that alter the way light rays enter your eye to achieve focus.
• The excimer laser reshapes your cornea into different zones for near, far and intermediate vision. Your brain then selects which zones it needs to get the sharpest vision.
• In each zone, light is bent or refracted differently, allowing you to regain good vision at all distances, similar to how multi-focal contact lenses or implants correct presbyopia. (Bifocal contacts move and can cause vision distortions whereas Bifocal LASIK provides fixed, stationary zones directly on the eye’s surface.)

What if I have good distance vision but only need help reading? Even if you have perfect distance vision, Bifocal LASIK is performed on one eye and works well because it gives you reading vision without the distance blur of monovision.

How much does it cost? Bifocal LASIK is $250 more per eye than standard iLASIK at OptiVision. It is slightly more than LASIK because the procedure requires extra steps with the laser.
