LASIK candidates must be at least 18 years old and have a stable prescription for at least a year prior to the procedure.
Eye Health: LASIK candidates must have healthy eyes. They must be free of any eye disease, keratonconus, glaucoma, retinal and optic nerve disorders, herpes in addition to several other conditions. This will be discussed during your consultation. LASIK candidates need to discuss other conditions with us prior to having LASIK such as: amblyopia, strabismus, and keyloid scarring.
LASIK candidates must be in good general health and free of certain health conditions such as uncontrolled diabetes, autoimmune or collagen vascular disease etc.
LASIK candidates who are pregnant or nursing should discuss this with their surgeon. Many times you can still have LASIK when you’re nursing but we would need to see what your pre-pregnancy prescription was to determine if hormones have caused a significant change in your prescription. In which case, we would delay surgery until you’ve stopped nursing.
LASIK candidates who suffer from chronic dry eyes should make their surgeon aware prior to LASIK since there are a couple of options available to you. An eye drops regimen and punctum plugs will be discussed during your consultation.
LASIK candidates who wear contact lenses will be asked to discontinue wearing them prior to your dilated exam with the doctor. This ensures corneal stability and accurate assessment of your prescription prior to your procedure. The length of time you’ll be out of your contacts depends on the type of contact lens that you wear. This will be discussed at your consultation.
A patient’s corneal thickness plays a very important role in determining candidacy for vision correction due to the nature of the LASIK procedure. All patients have their corneal thickness tested prior to the procedure.
